Landlord Fatally Stabs Tenant in Fight, Police Say

THE BRONX — A landlord stabbed his tenant to death in a fight in their Throgs Neck building Wednesday night, NYPD officials said.

Taha Mahran, 51, repeatedly stabbed Zakir Khan, 44, in the torso in their building at 1001 Logan Ave., near Barkley Avenue, about 6:30 p.m., police said.

Khan was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center, police said.

Mahran walked into the 45th Precinct with bloody clothes after attacking Khan and confessed to the crime, according to court documents.

"I stabbed someone. I told you in the past and couldn't get help," he told police. "I had to take matters into my own hands, so I stabbed him."

He has been charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the fight.

Khan lived in Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda's district, and the politician said in a statement that he was "shocked and saddened" by his constituent's death.

"Mr. Khan worked hard to empower the Bangladesh community throughout the city of New York," Sepulveda said. "He will be remembered for his advocacy and dedication to the Bangladesh-American community."

Sepulveda said he knew Mahran as well and described him as "generally a peaceful man, whose violent act was totally out of character."

"My prayers and thoughts are with both families," he said.

Mahran was ordered held without bail at his arraignment and is due back in court on Feb. 28, according to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
