GREENWICH VILLAGE — A bespectacled would-be burglar broke into a Greenwich Village apartment but fled with nothing when he ran into the resident who lives there, police said.

The suspect — described as approximately 5-foot-7 and wearing glasses — got into the apartment through the front door about 5:55 a.m. on Jan. 9, police said.

An NYPD spokesman said police are uncertain whether the door was locked but that it most likely had been left unlocked by accident. The spokesman declined to provide an address or nearby intersection for the incident.

The 38-year-old man who lives in the apartment encountered the burglar in his home, prompting the suspect to flee empty-handed, police said.

The NYPD is still looking for the suspect.

Police ask that anyone with information in regards to this incident call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES), then entering TIP577.
