BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — The Department of Buildings has approved plans to build a 36-story luxury high-rise at the site of the Brooklyn Heights Library, which was sold to a developer in a controversial deal last year.

The plans for the new 294,773-square-foot building, filed by Marvel Architects in January 2015, were approved on Dec. 27, DOB records show

The library was sold for $52 million to Hudson Companies, which will develop the residential tower along with a smaller library on the ground and cellar floors.

The 409-foot tower will include about 276,662 square feet of residential space over 134 residential units, storage space, a gym and a 52-car garage, the plans show.

The 26,620-square-foot library will include a reading room, meeting space, storage space and an upper mezzanine with another reading room, the developer said. The entrance to the library will be on Cadman Plaza West.

Hudson Companies has begun asbestos abatement and some pre-demolition work as it waits for the DOB to approve demolition plans, according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, which first reported the story.

The developer has not yet closed on the site, a spokesman told the paper.

Hudson Companies did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

The tower is slated to be completed by 2019 or 2020.
