TOMPKINSVILLE — The city wants an artist to install a temporary piece to beautify a stretch of fence near the Tompkinsville station.

The Department of Transportation partnered with the Staten Island MakerSpace to release a request for proposals for an artist or organization to install a piece on the chain-link fence at Bay Street and Victory Boulevard.

"We’re invested in trying to help lift up the neighborhood and the community and there’s a lot of unused spaced on the North Shore that’s great for public art," said DB Lampman, co-founder of the MakerSpace.

"We’re happy to see more art going up in the neighborhood, I think it’s going to be a great project. It's a corner that needs some help."

The selected artist or organization can get up to $12,000 from the city for the piece.

The project is part of the DOT's "Community Commissions" effort to install temporary pieces at spots in every borough request by residents for beautification.

Lampman said her group will work with the winning artists to manage the project and help take them down.

The city expects the installations to be completed next spring and remain in place for up to 11 months, according to the DOT.

The deadline to submit proposals for the project is Jan. 6, 2017.
