UPPER WEST SIDE — A series of paths in Riverside Park between West 91st and 95th streets will get a $600,000 makeover, the Parks Department said.

The paths surrounding Riverside Park's Crab Apple Grove and Hippo Playground have deteriorated and need reconstruction, the Parks Department said.

The project — funded through a $500,000 grant from City Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal and $100,000 from a park donor — will solve drainage issues, re-pave the paths and revive the landscaping, among other changes.

The project will involve reconstructing drainage structures and adding granite block around the path perimeters to prevent run off, the Parks Department said.

New mesh fencing will also go up around the paths, and the surrounding landscape will get new flowers and plants, the department said.

The asphalt paths will be re-paved as well, the agency said.

Finally, five new benches will replace the area's existing benches, and six new lampposts dubbed the "Riverside Park Luminaire" that are used elsewhere in the park will replace the existing light poles.

Community Board 7's Parks Committee approved the plan Monday. The project will go before the full board for its approval on Nov. 1.
