78-Year-Old Man in Wheelchair Robbed of Cash and Cigarettes, Police Say

RANDALL’S ISLAND — A 78-year-old man in a wheelchair was robbed by thieves who took his cash and cigarettes, police said.

The victim was outside the Clarke Thomas Men’s Shelter on Randall’s Island on Sept. 18 at 4:20 p.m. when a man came from behind and pushed him out of his wheelchair, police said.

A second suspect snatched a black plastic bag from the victim which contained about $370 in cash, three packs of Newport cigarettes and a cell phone, the victim told police.

The two suspects then fled on foot, police said.

Police found a plastic bag was discovered which was believed to be the one stolen from the victim, police said.

The bag had a dollar, a dollar coin, four quarters and one pack of Newport cigarettes in it, police said.

One of the suspects was described as being in his mid-30s. The other is in his mid-40s and was wearing a red T-shirt, police said.
