CROWN HEIGHTS — A slice of Down Under has arrived on Washington Avenue.

Seven Point Espresso opened last week in the neighborhood, bringing Australian food and cafe culture to a new eatery at the corner of Bergen Street.

The spot is the sixth location for a Melbourne-based restaurant group and its first in America, said Courtney Chapman, Seven Point’s manager.

She moved to the States to help open the cafe, the brainchild of Crown Heights resident (and Australia native) Lee Tryhorn and Phil Gijsbers, the Melbourne entrepreneur currently operating Seven Point’s sister sites in Australia.

The team is hoping to bring Melbourne’s “cafe scene” to Brooklyn, which is very different from what you find at a typical American coffee shop, Chapman said.

“We definitely have a caffeine addiction, but it’s a different kind,” she said. In Australia, “you have smaller coffee and less of it and when you’re having your coffee, it’s a social interaction. You’re speaking to your barista or the local staff. People always meet up with friends.”

“And in coffee shops back home, there’s not so many people by themselves. It’s always groups of friends getting together and sharing a meal, too,” she added.

To that end, Seven Point offers a full slate of fresh and seasonal dishes with its many coffee drinks.

Popular items include an open-faced smash avocado sandwich with mint, feta and green peas ($12), a variety of savory “toasties” (think gourmet ham-and-cheese) and “pikelets,” small, fluffy Australian pancakes ($14) made with fresh mascarpone and honeycomb, both whipped up in-house.

“You eat it and they’re so light, you don’t feel horrible. It’s not a sugar overload because we make everything fresh,” Chapman said.

Seven Point Espresso is open every day from 7 a.m to 5 p.m. at 637 Washington Ave.
