JAMAICA — An off-duty court officer fatally shot a man who was trying to rob him on a Jamaica street Sunday night, police said.

The 50-year-old officer, who works in State Supreme Court on Staten Island, was on his way to his second job as a security guard when the suspect approached him near Merrick Boulevard and South Road around 8:40 p.m., authorities said.

The suspect, who was in his 20s, pulled out a gun and demanded the officer's gun and money, police said.

The officer, who was wearing his security guard uniform, unholstered his own weapon and shot the mugger in the torso, police said.

The suspect, whose name has not been released as of Monday morning, was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officer was taken to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island, with chest pain, police said. He was in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing, police said Monday. It was not immediately clear whether the officer will be charged with a crime.
