CROWN HEIGHTS — With J’Ouvert a week away, the annual carnival holiday has stirred up some strong feelings.

Late last week, local Crown Heights police, Brooklyn officials and anti-violence groups posted a blunt message for J’Ouvert revelers on trees around the neighborhood: “Do not shoot anyone.

The posters aimed at those who may do violence at the pre-West Indian Day Parade celebration, which coincided with two fatalities last year.

But the posters has elicited strong reactions: from those who thought the words were too strong to those who cheered the anti-violence message. Readers took to Neighborhood Square this week to express their opinions:

► “I don't think that the folks who are committing those horrendous crimes over the years are from The Caribbean,” user wavle-joseph said.

► “There isn't anything racist about the cops keeping people safe. This parade and attendees has historically and consistently caused problems for years in the community,” wrote user Beentheredonethat. “Cancel the parade! I said the same thing after the Puerto Rican Day Parade gang assaults in 2000-2001. I say the same here. Cancel it.”

► “I have mixed feeling about the sign. It is sad that it is necessary to have to post something like this. I hate that these criminals have ruined things for good people. I no longer go to events that draw large crowds. I am constantly told you can't live in fear, but I am not placing myself in harms way,” said user mocha-swurl.

► “It insults the good people and can challenge the bad ones to cause even more trouble.  Who's dumb idea was this?  It adds fuel to the fire,” said user Ginas13.

► “If only the criminals can refrain themselves.  Doubt a piece of paper will stop them,” wrote user simon1999.
