Three New York City hospitals have made the cut for the 20 best in America in the latest annual ranking by U.S. News and World Report

New York-Presbyterian University Hospital, NYU Langone Medical Center and Mount Sinai Hospital rank sixth, 10th and 15th respectively on the Report's 2016-2017 honor roll, out Tuesday.

In an analysis of nearly 5,000 medical centers, hospitals were scored based on such factors as patient survival and safety, nurse staffing and performance in specialties like heart surgery, endocrinology and geriatrics.

The rankings are an informational tool for patients who require "surgery or special care that poses unusual technical challenges or significantly increased risk of death or harm because of age, physical condition or existing conditions" according to the U.S. News and World Report.

New York-Presbyterian on the Upper East Side ranked first in the New York metro area, with high scores in adult specialties like psychiatry and neurology.

NYU Langone in Murray Hill ranked second in the metro area, earning particularly high scores in geriatrics and orthopedics.

Mount Sinai in East Harlem ranked third in the metro area, excelling in geriatrics and gastroenterology.

All three are teaching hospitals.
