Mother Abducts 7-Month-Old Daughter From Foster Care, Police Say

By Eddie Small | July 20, 2016 2:22pm

MOTT HAVEN — A mother abducted her baby daughter from a child welfare facility on Wednesday afternoon during an unsupervised visit, police said.

The 30-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, was having an authorized visit with her 7-month-old daughter at the New York Foundling site at 170 Brown Place in Mott Haven around 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday when she walked out of the building with her child, according to the NYPD.

Police were immediately notified about the abduction, and the New York Foundling is continuing to work closely with the NYPD to get the child returned safely and quickly, according to a spokeswoman for the Foundling.

The mother was not being monitored during her visit, police said, but it was unclear if she was supposed to be watched.

Officers said they are looking into whether the mother has a criminal history and are unsure what direction she left in.

The Administration for Children's Services released a statement saying they were concerned about the abduction and investigating it with the NYPD but declined to comment further, citing confidentiality laws.
