MELROSE — A Bronx father was fatally shot in the back in the Melrose Houses Tuesday night, police said.

Adrien Nieves, 24, who lived by 150th Street and Courtlandt Avenue, was shot nearby across the street from 305 E. 153rd St., near Morris Avenue, about 11:53 p.m., according to the NYPD.

He was pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the shooting, and investigators are still looking for video of the incident, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

The victim, whose family identified him as Adrian Maldonado, had a one-year-old son, Adrian Jr., who had just celebrated his first birthday on Sunday with a big party, according to his family.

His sister Wanda Maldonado, 22, described him as a very relaxed person who loved music and just wanted to have a family to take care of.

"That was my only brother. We're all in disbelief," she said. "It's hard to believe he's really gone."
