Mosaics by Chuck Close to Be Displayed at Second Avenue Subway Stop: MTA

By Shaye Weaver | July 6, 2016 2:24pm

UPPER EAST SIDE — A permanent installation featuring works by renowned artist Chuck Close will be displayed in the 86th Street stop of the Second Avenue Subway once the line opens to the public, according to MTA officials.

Twelve large mosaics and tile portraits, which the artist is known for, will hang in the new stop, when the line opens in December, officials said.

The Second Avenue Subway, which will connect the Q line to the Lexington/63rd Street station and provide service from East 63rd to East 96th streets along Second Avenue, is slated for a December opening, but the MTA is rushing to meet that deadline, officials said.

MTA Arts & Design posted a teaser on its social media on Tuesday alluding to the installation.

Close, who splits his time between the East Village and Long Island, is a painter and photographer known for transforming photographs into larger-than-life abstract portraits.

The MTA spokeswoman declined to comment further on the exhibit, saying they didn't have more information.
