QUEENS — Vietnamese flavors have now joined the Forest Hills culinary scene.

Violet’s Bake Shoppe, an Asian bakery that opened at 72-36 Austin St. in January, expanded its offerings over the weekend to introduce Banh Mi, Vietnamese sandwiches, which will be sold in addition to egg tarts, Asian buns and coconut puddings that have already been on the menu.

“We always thought that this neighborhood needs a good sandwich store,” said Cody But, who works at the bakery.

He also said that while Vietnamese sandwiches are popular in other neighborhoods, they were not available in Central Queens.

Patrons can choose from 10 kinds of Banh Mi sandwiches that cost between $5.50 and $6.95.

Varieties include grilled minced pork, baked flounder fish, pate and lemongrass chicken.

There are also two vegan options — lemongrass tofu and house special vegetarian, served with mushrooms, tofu, jicama and vermicelli, the owners said.

The sandwiches are served in a baguette with carrot, radish, cucumber and cilantro, and all ingredients are made on the premises.

The bakery said that for now it’s testing whether locals will embrace the new option. If the sandwiches prove popular, Violet’s Bake Shoppe will incorporate them into its permanent menu.
