PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDENS — A new brick oven pizza spot is opening soon in the neighborhood, bringing a “low-key” lounge to a Rogers Avenue storefront, its co-owner said.

The new restaurant, Streetsweeper, is set to open on July 8 at 594 Rogers Ave., said co-owner Michael Casas who presented a plan for the business at Brooklyn Community Board 9 this week.

“We’re doing a cafe lounge,” he told the board members, who supported the restaurant's application for a liquor license. “Pizza, beer, wine, salad, burgers. Very simple, very low-key.”

The State Liquor Authority has the final say in granting a liquor license.

The business is a first for Casas and his partners, who have worked at other city restaurants including Pulino’s, but never had their own place. The name, “Streetsweeper,” comes from the group’s favorite Martin Luther King Jr. quotation that begins, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo painted.”

“I’ve known one of my partners since we were 17 and we knew that was going to be the name since we set out on this search,” he said. “It’s a dream come true.”

Streetsweeper will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, serving breakfast and cafe fare during the day and dinner and drinks at night, he said. Pizza will be the specialty — the Rogers Avenue spot came with a brick oven already installed from a previous pizza restaurant, Ramagi, that recently closed — with pies ranging from a 10-inch “bargain pie” (sauce and cheese only) for $5 to 18-inch family-sized pies, most priced at $16.

The lounge will have about 45 seats, including an outdoor space in the back, Casas said.

Streetsweeper is located at 594 Rogers Ave. between Hawthorne and Winthrop streets. To see their menu or for more information, visit streetsweeperbrooklyn.com.
