Target Clerk Arrested After Helping Family Steal Merchandise, Police Say

PARK SLOPE — A Target cashier was arrested after letting her friends and family steal nearly $600 in merchandise, according to a police report.

The 38-year-old employee was arrested at the Target at the Atlantic Terminal Mall on June 13 after a security guard spotted her scanning purchases by her friends and family members, then voiding the transactions so they wouldn't be charged, according to the report.

The employee's pals and relatives then left the store with the merchandise in shopping bags, according to the report. The $585 in stolen goods included clothes, groceries, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene products, bedding and a toy scooter, the report stated.

Other recent crimes in the 78th Precinct include the following, with details from police reports:

► A 54-year-old cabbie was arrested after throwing an aerosol can at another cab driver at a taxi garage on Butler Street and Fourth Avenue on June 14 about 5:18 p.m. The cabbie, who was arrested, got angry about the other taxi driver using a certain cab. He shouted, "That's my car," then chased the other cabbie and threw the spray can at his shoulder, causing an abrasion.

► Two teen girls were arrested June 19 for stealing $155 in merchandise from American Apparel on Flabtbush Avenue and Park Place. The girls, 16 and 17, were spotted on a store surveillance camera taking clothing off shelves and putting it inside an H&M shopping bag.

► A 27-year-old woman was arrested after stealing $60 in merchandise from Old Navy inside Atlantic Center mall on June 14 at 5:30 p.m.

► A 47-year-old woman had her $900 Apple laptop stolen when she left it on a bench in front of the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza and walked away. The theft happened on June 1 at 5:20 p.m.

► A shopper at Target in the Atlantic Terminal mall had her Samsung Galaxy phone stolen when she left it on top of her baby's carriage then turned her back while she was shopping on June 11 at 5:50 p.m.

► A thief stole a silver and black iPhone 5 on June 12 at 6:15 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless store on Seventh Avenue and Garfield Place.

Overall, major crime in the 78th Precinct has dropped 16 percent this year compared to the same period in 2015, according to the most recent statistics from the NYPD. There were 330 major crimes reported between Jan. 1 and June 12, 2016, and 395 major crimes during that period in 2015.
