Man Gets Elderly Woman to Give Him $3K by Posing as Jailed Friend: NYPD

By Aidan Gardiner | June 17, 2016 11:11am | Updated on June 20, 2016 8:55am

STATEN ISLAND — A man convinced an 80-year-old Elm Park woman to give him $3,000 by pretending he was her friend who needed to be bailed out of jail, police said.

The man, who can be seen in surveillance footage released by police, first called the woman about 8 a.m. on May 13 and claimed he was an acquaintance of hers who was in jail and needed bail money, NYPD officials said.

He then visited her home near Faber Street and Grove Avenue, got the money and left, police said.

It was only later that the woman realized that her friend wasn't in jail and that she'd been deceived, police said.

The suspect was last seen wearing a brown baseball cap with a brown jacket, police said.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
