BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Eastern Bedford-Stuyvesant’s precinct council has a new leader after its president stepped down from her post following more than a decade on the executive board.

Martha Works, a long-time community resident, served as president of the 81st Precinct Community Council since 2014 and worked as a member for more than 40 years.

The council’s vice president, Daniel Fisher, takes the reins following the June 14 election from council members.

Works held positions on the board including corresponding secretary, vice president and finally president, replacing community leader Catherine Arline.

“As a long-standing and dedicated member of Bedford-Stuyvesant, born and raised here, my family has always played key roles in the betterment of our community,” Works told attendees at this month's meeting, adding that residents should look after their neighbors, “speak to the children” and unify their blocks.

“I truly hope that I have demonstrated and provided my council with my best effort, as this work has truly been a labor of love.”

Local leaders thanked Works for her time and leadership, extending their congratulations and adding that it was an honor to work with her.

“She’s been great,” Fisher said of his predecessor. “I certainly hope that she continues to be a part of us and continues to give her love and support our way.”

Fisher, who has chaired several events for the precinct, has been a part of the council for more than 20 years, starting with his membership in the youth council, he said.

The 81st Precinct covers the neighborhood from Marcus Garvey Boulevard to Saratoga Avenue and Broadway to Atlantic Avenue.
