DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A teen employee at a Myrtle Avenue grocery store stole $1,400 from customers by overcharging during cash-back transactions — telling authorities she had to do it in order to pay her mother’s rent, police and prosecutors said.

The 17-year-old cashier at Red Apple Supermarket, at 218 Myrtle Ave. near Ashland Place, overcharged several customers between April and June of this year, the NYPD said.

On June 10, she took out $100 in cash-back money from a $31.30 transaction, the Brooklyn District Attorney's office said.

Police said she stole more than $1,400 total, and when she was caught, she told authorities that she did it to pay her mom's rent, the NYPD said.

She was ultimately charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property for the June 10 incident.

Attorney information for the teen was not available.

A manager at Red Apple declined to comment Wednesday.
