Man Caught Urinating on Greenwich Ave. Shoves Police Officer, NYPD Says

GREENWICH VILLAGE — A man caught urinating on a public sidewalk shoved an officer who was trying to issue him a summons, police said.

The 30-year-old man was spotted urinating outside 62 Greenwich Ave. near West 11th Street by an officer about 1:25 a.m. on May 19, police said.

When the officer drove up to the man in a marked police car, the man tried to open the officer's car door, police said.

He was told to step back and the officer tried to take out his NYPD-issued cell phone to check if the man had any open warrants, police said.

But police said the man got closer and closer to the officer until he was within a foot of him, and refused to listen when the officer told him to step back three times.

The man then shoved the officer in his chest, police said. The officer reported being concerned for his own safety.

The officer tried to handcuff the man, but he tensed his arms and refused to put his hands behind his back, police said.

When the officer finally succeeded in handcuffing him, he discovered the man had two open warrants for arrests in Queens, police said. Court records indicate the arrests were for public drinking and offensive behavior.

The man was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing government administration, both misdemeanors, and was issued a violation for public urination.

A judge released him without bail. He is due back in court on June 28. His lawyer did not immediately respond to a voicemail seeking comment.
