The MTA is auditioning 70 new musical acts for its Music Under New York program in Grand Central's Vanderbilt Hall next week.

MTA Arts and Design, the agency's department overseeing public art in the subways, chose 70 finalists out of 233 applications, a press release said.

A panel of judges with representatives from the music industry, cultural institutions and the MTA will select 20 performers to join the program's current roster of more than 350.

Performers competing this year hail from the five boroughs, Long Island, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and they include carolers, a Japanese folk singer and a Romanian accordionist, the MTA said.

This will be the 29th annual audition for the Music Under New York program, which brings musical acts to about thirty sites in the city's subway stations.

Auditions start at 9 a.m. on May 18th, and the public is invited to watch and cheer on their favorite competitors.
