SUNSET PARK — The driver of a van was arrested after fatally hitting a 67-year-old man in Sunset Park last month, police said Wednesday.

Yiru Weng, 67, was found lying in the street with severe head injuries on Sixth Avenue near 52nd Street on April 20 at about 12:23 p.m. after he was hit by the driver of a Ford E-250 van, authorities said.

Weng, who lived around the corner from the crash site, was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center but died three days later on April 23, police said.

The driver, Rodsel Pinkhasov was traveling eastbound on 52nd Street and hit Weng while turning left northbound onto Sixth Avenue. Weng, at the time, was crossing Sixth Avenue inside the crosswalk, according to police.

Pinkhasov remained on scene and was arrested. He was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care, police said Wednesday.

The charge of "failure to yield" is by law charged as a Desk Appearance Ticket, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney's office.

Only 15 percent of drivers who killed pedestrians or cyclists were charged in the first two years of the city's Vision Zero law designed to increase penalties against drivers, a DNAinfo New York investigation found.
