THE BRONX — A bus rider swiped an MTA driver's hat as he was helping a wheelchair passenger off the bus, and then punched him in the face when he chased after the thief to get it back, police said Thursday.

The 47-year-old driver, whose name wasn't released, was parked in Kingsbridge Heights about 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 28 and was helping the passenger in a wheelchair get off the bus when his attacker, who can be seen in police photos, started arguing with him, NYPD officials said.

The suspect then stole the driver's MTA hat and tried to flee the bus, but the driver caught up to him hoping to get his hat back, police said.

The suspect punched him in the face several times before escaping, police said. He hadn't been arrested as of Thursday, police said.

The driver refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
