MANHATTAN — A Bronx man stabbed another man in an early-morning confrontation outside the W New York Hotel in Union Square last week, according to police.

A 30-year-old Fordham resident got into an argument with a 29-year-old Brooklyn man on the sidewalk in front of the 201 Park Ave. South hotel, when the dispute escalated to violence, police said.

During the scuffle, he stabbed the victim and slashed his hand, leaving him with a cut on his finger and a deep stab wound to the stomach, according to a police report.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital.

After arresting the assailant at the scene, they found he was carrying a gravity knife in his pocket. He told officers that he had wielded the blade in self defense, police said.

A police spokeswoman said it was unclear from the crime report if the two men knew each other.

Prosecutors charged him with attempted murder and two assault charges, but at a court hearing on April 15 the Manhattan District Attorney’s office requested that his bail be reduced to zero, according to a spokeswoman. A judge then released him without bail pending his next court date on June 22, records show.

His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An employee of the hotel declined to comment when reached by telephone.
