Named for a mill that long ago stood on the shores of Gowanus Creek, Freek’s Mill has a wood-fired oven for roasting meats, fish and veggies. The menu includes barbecue kohlrabi with grits and mustard greens, monkfish with fried rice and charred cabbage and dry aged duck with refried cranberry beans and rosemary honey.

The Juice Shop is now open in Brooklyn. The juice and smoothie chain, which has three other locations in Manhattan, offers a range of raw food and drinks, including the Coco-Kale acai bowl, the Elvis oatmeal or granola bowl (bananas, raw honey, almond butter and almond milk) and the Cool It Now smoothie (green tea, mint, pineapple, honey and spirulina). The Juice Shop also sells a variety of juice cleanse packages starting at $15 a day for the beginner’s Power Lunch cleanse and up to $48 a day for the All Day Power Broker cleanse.

Every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, the restaurant at the Whitney Museum now hosts a “neighborhood” happy hour starting at 5:30 p.m. The chefs will create special menus of bar snacks and cocktails using ingredients from New York farms, like Beet Pickled Egg with Char Spread and Trout Roe and Not a Long Island Iced Tea, made with Long Island vodka and South Fork vermouth.

Previously purveyors of desserts and savories only, one-year-old Pels Pie Co. in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens now has a dinner menu with a rotating selection of comfort foods like chicken pot pie, black bean chili, lasagna and lamb-and-vegetable stuffed peppers. Prices are low (between $5 and $7, usually) and the spot has good options for sides, too.
