NEW SPRINGVILLE — A woman put her still-alive newborn daughter in a plastic bag and threw her out with the trash, where she was later found dead, prosecutors said.
Nausheen Rahman, 28, of Staten Island, was arrested on Saturday and charged with murder and unlawful concealment of a human corpse at her Monday arraignment, according to the Staten Island District Attorney's office.
On Friday, Rahman gave birth to the child then later put her in a plastic bag and placed her in a dumpster near her home, prosecutors said.
Officers discovered the newborn inside the garbage outside Rahman's Richmond Hill Road home, near Vassar Street, at about 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, police said.
Rahman had gone to Staten Island University Hospital North and complained to staff that she was bleeding after she gave birth at home, the New York Post reported.
She reportedly told hospital staff she gave birth five days before and "threw away" the baby, then later said she gave birth Thursday, according to the Post.
The medical examiner is determining the cause of the baby's death.
Rahman was held without bail and is due back in court on Friday, the DA said.
Her lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
