PELHAM BAY — A Bronx man was charged with attempted murder after he detonated a homemade aerosol can bomb under the car of a possible drug rival last week, according to the Bronx District Attorney.

Richard Laugel, 36, is accused of putting the device under Antonio Gurrero's red Nissa Vera on March 2, prosecutors said.

It exploded while Gurrero and his girlfriend were driving near the corner of Mahan and Roberts avenues in Pelham Bay just past 7 p.m. was inside of the vehicle, court documents say.

Gurrero started to see smoke coming out of the car just before it detonated, sources said.

Although the couple wasn't hurt, the explosion blew out the car's rear right tire and set off all of the passenger air bags, according to the NYPD.

Officers found two explosive devices made out of aerosol cans attached to the bottom of the car, police said.

Laugel was arraigned Sunday night on charges of arson, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment. He was ordered held without bail and is due back in court on March 11.

He has multiple prior arrests for burglary, criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.

Although the motive for the crime remains unclear, police suspect that the incident was drug related.
