TIMES SQUARE — Glass workers who got stuck near the top of a Midtown hotel for over an hour were rescued Tuesday afternoon, FDNY officials said.
The two workers were heading up to the roof after a day of replacing glass when their scaffold stalled outside the 62nd floor of the Marriott at 1717 Broadway, near West 54th Street, at 1:22 p.m., their supervisor and city officials said.
FDNY crews secured them with ropes by 2 p.m. and cut through the window glass to bring the men back to safety in about 20 minutes, Division Three Deputy Chief Joseph Ferrante said.
The workers, who were "very thankful" for being rescued, weren't injured, Ferrante said. They declined medical treatment after being looked at by paramedics.
"They were fine. Obviously cold, a little wet, but fine," Ferrante said.
The men, who work for construction company Permasteelisa, got stuck after deciding to turn in for the day because of the wind and rain, supervisor Tom Dempinski said.
The scaffolding's "breaker popped," said mechanic Louis Merced, who told reporters he had gotten the scaffold to work before the FDNY used a special saw to cut the glass.
"This was overdone," Merced said. "There was no need for the FDNY."
Dempinski said the workers didn't "panic" while communicating with firefighters via a radio that was lowered down to them.
"They're well-trained," he said. "These things happen."
