CHELSEA — A decades-old fabric store near the Fashion Institute of Technology is moving out of its Seventh Avenue space.
Truemart Discount Fabrics, which has operated out of 261 Seventh Ave. for the past 40 years, will move to another location on West 25th Street, a store employee confirmed Monday. The staffer did not name the exact address.
“The rent went up,” said the employee, who declined to give his name. “[The new location] will be within a one-block proximity.”
Two agents for Winick Realty Group, which is leasing out the 261 Seventh Ave. space, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.
The move, which was first reported by Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York, will happen within the next few months, the staffer said.
Vacating the Seventh Avenue space will involve packing up the thousands of fabric bolts that currently occupy the 800-square-foot store.
“We’re used to the same place," the employee added. "It’s a lot of work to physically move."
