ASTORIA — Find the perfect merlot for that Oreo.

Astoria venue Q.E.D. is offering a class for laid-back imbibers, a lesson on "realistic wine pairings" that will teach participants what tastes best with leftover Chinese takeout, a bag of Doritos and other junk food.

The Feb. 13 class — part of Q.E.D's series of upcoming Valentine's Day events — is an alternative to traditional wine pairing classes, which tend to focus on what to drink alongside a fancy restaurant meal or high-end home cooking, organizers said.

"How often do we actually do that sort of thing?" said Michael Pomranz, a comedian and food writer who's teaching the $40 class.

"More likely we're just cracking open a bottle of wine for the hell of it, or eating the crap we have lying around the house."

Pomranz said the concept for the event was based on an article he wrote last year that featured a interview with winemaker Charles Smith, who offered him advice on what wine is best with things like popcorn (a cava) or Oreo cookies (a bold Cabernet Sauvignon).

The class will allow participants to sample a number of junk food-and-wine matchups and teach them "a simple take" on how to pair the two, Pomranz said.

"Discuss what kind of things you need to look for in a pairing that aren't these high-minded, esoteric things," he explained.

The class will take place Feb. 13 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. You can buy tickets online here.

Q.E.D., a bar and events venue on 23rd Avenue that bills itself as "after-school for grownups" is hosting a number of other Valentine's Day-themed activities next month, including calligraphy lessons and a romance-themed story-telling show.
