SOUTH BRONX — The police officer who was shot in the foot by friendly fire while breaking up a large fight in The Bronx was released from the hospital on Thursday morning.

Sherrod Stuart was responding to several 911 calls on Jan. 9 about a massive fight at 2505 Third Ave. in tMott Haven involving guns, knives and bats when he was shot in the right foot.

Although police initially suspected 19-year-old Christopher Rice of shooting Stuart, they later said he had been shot by friendly fire instead.

Rice was nonetheless charged with menacing a police officer, along with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon, authorities said. He is being held at Rikers Island and is due back in court on Feb. 8.

Stuart left the Hospital for Special Surgery on East 70th Street around 9 a.m. Thursday and returned home. There is still no time frame for his return to active duty, according to Inspector Carlos Valdez, commanding officer at the 40th Precinct.

Valdez described Stuart as a "good cop who I hope makes a full and speedy recovery."
