Man Loses Consciousness During Cellphone Theft, Police Say

LOWER EAST SIDE — A thief attacked a 51-year-old man walking home over the weekend after stealing his phone, police said.

The suspect approached the man behind 200 Monroe St. at about 11 p.m. on Jan. 17, police said, and then pushed him into a metal fence after taking his iPhone.

The man hit his head and fell to the ground, cutting his right eye and the back of his head, according to the NYPD. The victim also briefly lost consciousness, police said.

Police said the man was taken to Bellevue Hospital.

A description for the thief was not immediately available.
