THE BRONX — Teens who mugged an off-duty NYPD sergeant who then shot one of them were charged Tuesday, police said.

Michael Monserrate, 18, Lucas Javier, 17, and another male who has not yet been arrested pulled knives and a gun on the sergeant near East 178th Street and Creston Avenue about 3:54 a.m. Monday, NYPD officials said.

They managed to take the sergeant's cellphone but he opened fire on them, wounding Monserrate, police said.

Monserrate, who was carrying knives, was treated at St. Barnabas Hospital for a gunshot to the torso, police said. His wounds were not considered life threatening.

Investigators used social media to track down Javier, who told them when they took him into custody that he was present during the robbery, an NYPD spokesman said.

Monserrate and Javier, who both live in Concourse, were charged with robbery, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, officials said.

Javier was also charged with criminal possession of stolen property, police said.

An NYPD spokesman did not have a description of the third suspect.

Monserrate was previously arrested in May for weapon possession and again in December for criminal possession of marijuana, an NYPD spokesman said.
