CHELSEA — A drag racer with a suspended license and booze on his breath led police on a high-speed chase that ended with his arrest on the West Side Highway, police said.
The 28-year-old speedster, who was driving a 2010 yellow Chevy Camaro with Maryland license plates, was racing another driver past the northwest corner of 10th Avenue and West 34th Street around 1 a.m. on Saturday when police pulled him over, the NYPD said.
When officers approached the driver, he hit the gas pedal and sped away, running a red light and nearly causing an accident with two yellow cabs, according to police.
The officers then jumped into their car to chase the man as he high-tailed it onto the West Side Highway.
Officers followed the man as he drove south on the highway, changing lanes without signaling and forcing other drivers out of his way, police said.
Police finally managed to pull him over, at which point they discovered he was driving with a suspended New York license and detected a slight smell of alcohol on his breath, the NYPD said.
He was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, police said.
