THE BRONX — Seven subway stations throughout the borough are due to close for between six to eight weeks for major upgrades under Gov. Andrew Cuomo's recently announced plan to renovate the MTA.

The 3rd Ave-138th St, Brook Ave, Hunts Point Ave and Westchester Square-East Tremont Ave stations on the 6 train will be renovated, as will the 174th-175th St and 167th St stops on the B and D trains and the Pelham Parkway stop on the 5 train.

“The MTA is absolutely vital to the daily functioning of New York City, but for too long it has failed to meet the region’s growing size and strength,” Cuomo said. “This is about doing more than just repair and maintain—this is thinking bigger and better and building the 21st century transit system New Yorkers deserve.”

A total of 30 subway stations across the city are scheduled for renovations under the plan, with improvements including expanding Wi-Fi hotspots and providing USB ports in stations and on subway trains and buses to help commuters charge their devices.

Work on stations in The Bronx should take between six months to a year to complete, but the stops should only be closed for six to eight weeks and will not all be closed simultaneously, according to the MTA.

Work on all 30 stations should be finished by 2020, but the MTA has not yet determined what specific improvements stations in The Bronx will get, when they will get them or when they will close down.

"It’s too soon to have a schedule for the work or for the shutdown portions of those projects in particular," MTA spokesman Adam Lisberg said. "As we develop those plans, we’ll work with the community and its elected officials to spread the word about them and ensure everyone has time to plan for them."
