►First Look Film Festival
Where: Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave., Astoria

The First Look film festival — which showcases “eye-opening and mind-expanding international cinema" — will take place for its fifth year at the museum from Jan. 8 to 24. Screenings will take place all weekend, kicking off Friday night with a showing of the French film “Francofonia.” Opening night tickets are $15, the rest are $12.
► MulchFest 2016
Where: 14 designated parks throughout Queens
When: Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bring your holiday tree to a city park where it will be recycled into mulch. Wood chips will be later used to nourish plants across the city. To find designated parks go here.
Friday, Jan. 8
► Natalia Bernal & La Voz de Tres
Where: Terraza 7, 40-19 Gleane St., Elmhurst
When: 9:30 p.m.
The world jazz trio of vocalist Natalia Bernal, keyboardist Mike Eckroth and guitarist Jason Ennis bring their original music and covers to the jazz club on Friday. There's a $10 cover charge for the mezzanine.
► Hip Hop: BBoy/BGirl 101: The Art of Break Dancing
Where: Richmond Hill Library, 118-14 Hillside Ave., Richmond Hill
When: 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
If your kids like hip-hop, they can now also learn the basic breakin’ moves to dance to the music. The free program is organized as part of a series of hip-hop themed events at the Queens Library. Those who can’t make it this week will get another chance next Friday, also at the Richmond Hill branch, as well as on Jan. 29 and Feb. 5 at the Rosedale Library.
Saturday, Jan. 9
► Celebrate Wink the Penguin
Where: Wink's Boulder on 75th Street and 37th Road, Jackson Heights
When: 11 a.m.
The neighborhood's beloved mascot will be honored, along with the woman who dresses him, at a celebration on Saturday morning. Come meet her and take a selfie with Wink, who will be dressed in a tuxedo.
► Q.E.D. Art Gallery Opening Reception
Where: Q.E.D., 27-16 23rd Ave., Astoria
When: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Check out the latest exhibit at the art gallery at event venue Q.E.D., with an opening show featuring the work of local artists Sharon Spell and Michael Harper. The event is free and include wine and light snacks.
► Suspended Forest Exhibit in Maspeth
Where: Knockdown Center, 52-19 Flushing Ave., Maspeth
When: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Artist Michael Neff's Suspended Forest — which will fill a massive room with old Christmas trees collected on the street — will have an opening reception Saturday at the Maspeth art space. You can walk under the trees, which are assembled in a grid and will produce pine needle "halos" as the trees shed. Plus that holiday smell of pine will linger throughout the month.
Sunday, Jan. 10
► Con Brio Ensemble Concert
Where: The Church-in-the-Gardens, 50 Ascan Ave., Forest Hills
When: 4:30 p.m.
Violinist Alexander Meshibovsky, oboist Alan Hollander, pianist Diana Mittler-Battipaglia and soprano Osceola Davis will perform works by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, and Wieniawski. Tickets are $12 ($10 for students and seniors). For more info visit their site.
► Kaiju Big Battel
Where: La Boom, 56-15 Northern Blvd, Woodside
When: 3 p.m.
Kaiju Big Battel is described as a “live monster wrestling spectacle,” where costumed monsters battle each other. Sunday’s kid-friendly show will be a fundraiser for the local Our World Neighborhood Charter School on 35th Avenue. Tickets are $10 for kids, $20 for adults can can be purchased here.
