WOODHAVEN — Police are questioning the boyfriend of a 19-year-old woman who was found dead in her bed on Jan. 1, officials said Monday.

The woman, identified as Joceline Romo, was found unconscious and unresponsive, lying face down in her bed inside her apartment on 86th Street, between 91st and Atlantic avenues roughly 10:45 p.m., police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initially, police said the body had “no apparent trauma,” but the city's Medical Examiner later found evidence that Romo was beaten and strangled.

"The cause of death is homicidal violence including blunt force trauma of head and compression of neck," ME spokeswoman Julie Bolcer said in an email.

The boyfriend, whose name has not been released, had not been arrested as of Monday morning, police said.

Romo's death was the first homicide in New York City in 2016, authorities said.
