STAPLETON — A worker at a Staten Island dollar store stole more than $2,000 by creating fake returns and transactions for gift cards, prosecutors said.

Tevin Burks, 19, who worked at the Family Dollar at 135 Canal St., had an accomplice — who hadn't been arrested as of Monday — bring items that weren't paid for to his register and creating returns for them, prosecutors said.

On Dec. 23, Burks allegedly transferred $391.95 to the accomplice's debit card and $470.34 to the card on Dec. 27, prosecutors said.

Burks also rang up three gift cards worth $1,500 on Dec. 29 and pocketed them, prosecutors said.

He was arrested on Dec. 30 and charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny, according to the Staten Island District Attorney's office.

Burks was released without bail and is due back in court on March 30, according to online court records.

His lawyer could not be reached for comment.
