Saturday, January 2
First Saturdays for Families: Unfamiliar Faces
Where? New Museum, 235 Bowery, Lower East Side
When? 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
How Much? Free
Join a family workshop offered in conjunction with the exhibition “Barbara Rossi: Poor Traits,” (closing Jan. 3). After viewing the exhibition, families are invited to produce portraits of each other that are inspired by the cartoonish characters seen in Rossi’s reverse Plexiglas paintings. To emulate the exaggerated forms within Rossi’s work, families will create their images using the method of blind contour drawing — an exercise in which an artist draws a subject without looking at the paper.

You might not realize it, but New York City is home to an amazing abundance of wildlife. NYC Parks Rangers will guide you to the best wildlife viewing spots in the urban jungle. Saturday, explore a popular area for seal sightings.

MakeFest 1716-2016
Where? Historic Richmond Town, 441 Clarke Avenue, Richmondtown
When? 5 to 8 p.m.
How Much? Adults $15, Child 12 and under $10. 
Try a new and different way to welcome in the new year. If you like working with your hands or enjoy watching craftspeople make stuff, this is a night made for you.

Sunday, January 3
Light in Winter: First Sundays
Where? Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 150 Eastern Parkway, Prospect Heights
When? 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
How Much? Free with garden admission ($12)
From December through March, Brooklyn Botanic Garden presents First Sundays, a series of festive events for children and adults of all ages. Among the special programs are opportunities to spend time outside, as well as indoor activities (origami, pillow making) in the Lillian and Amy Goldman Atrium.

Cosmic Colors
Where? Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, Pier 86, 12th Ave. and 46th Street., Hell's Kitchen
When? 11 a.m.
How Much? Free with Intrepid/Space Shuttle Pavilion admission. (Adults $31). 
Learn how astronomers give photos of outer space their vibrant colors by taking a tour of the HUBBLE@25 exhibition, and paint your own versions of deep space objects using real Hubble data in this scientific and artistic workshop.

Arty Facts: "Transformation"
Where? Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Prospect Heights
When? At 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
How Much? There’s a materials fee of $10 (for up to four participants). The materials fee is $5 for gallery/studio families and museum members.
In the thirtieth anniversary year of Arty Facts, you and your family will explore the galleries through fun activities and engaging conversations, then head to the studio to create an artwork of your own. For children ages 4 to 7.
