EAST WILLIAMSBURG — An opportunistic thief stole a man's car while the driver was distracted chasing another man who just swiped his cellphone, police said.

The unidentified 50-year-old victim had his iPhone swiped through the car window while he was driving his Nissan Altima on Powers Street Sunday morning about2 a.m. The driver left his Nissan Altima unattended when he jumped out to chase the criminal, police.

When he got back to his car, it was gone, according to authorities.

Police said they combed the area and eventually found the car a few blocks away in front of 304 Maujer St.

The car was still running and whoever had stolen it had run it into a parked car and damaged the passenger side, officials said.

The man's iPhone 6 was not recovered and no one had been arrested for the incident as of Wednesday morning.
