Several Families Lose Homes in Bed-Stuy Blaze, Red Cross Says

BROOKLYN — At least three families lost their homes and a firefighter suffered minor injuries after two residential buildings caught fire in Bed-Stuy Monday afternoon, according to the FDNY and Red Cross.

The two-alarm blaze broke out at 274 and 272 Skillman St., near Lafayette Avenue at about 3:36 p.m., destroying at least three apartments, officials said.

No residents were injured in either three-story building, an FDNY spokesman said, and the Red Cross was working to provide temporary houisng for the families.

The firefighter was taken to Brooklyn Hospital Center.  

Responders were able to get the fire under control after 5 p.m. and kept it from spreading to any other adjacent buildings.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the blaze.
