BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A Brooklyn non-profit which aims to help educate locals on food justice and healthy eating is offering free cooking classes for the neighborhood.

Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development Corporation will host the Team Chef Challenge in the new year, providing an eight-week culinary course for aspiring cooks to learn time and money-saving tips.

It will divide 14 participants into teams which will do battle with different dishes each week, according to NEBHDCo.’s Community Healthy Food Advocate, Bianca Bockman.

Students will start out with recipes familiar to the neighborhood, Bockman said, such as southern and American cuisine, then move onto international foods.

Accompanying workshops are also expected to provide an in-depth understand of the local food system.

“A lot of it is feeling more confident in the kitchen,” Bockman added. “To have a feeling that cooking healthy is a doable thing in our crazy, busy lives, without a lot of money.”

The classes will also provide strategies in smart shopping and picking fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Community chefs, who are local residents that received free training from NEBHDCo., will help lead the lessons.

The culinary courses are open to adults and those interested must submit an online application by Dec. 21.

Participants must commit to attending all eight weeks and classes will be held at the Demonstration Kitchen, at 376 Throop Ave., on Tuesday evenings from Jan. 12 through March 1.
