EAST WILLIAMSBURG — A brand new skateboarding park and sand volleyball courts opened in Cooper Park Friday, part of a $2.8 million facelift in the park.

In addition to the skate ramps and court, the overhaul included upgraded tennis, handball and basketball courts and a new dog run, parks department officials said.

The new area, locate near intersection of Sharon Street and Morgan Avenue was paid for by Councilman Antonio Reynoso's office in 2011 fiscal year, parks officials said.

Construction began in April this year, officials said.

On Monday morning a handful of skateboarders turned out to glide over the freshly poured ramps

"It's amazing," boarder Miles Ross, 31, said. "The concrete is really smooth. You barely have to push and you roll around forever."
