BROOKLYN — Bird watchers are flocking to Prospect Park to get a glimpse of a Technicolor visitor so rare it's being compared to a unicorn.
A Painted Bunting — a species of Cardinal typically found in the south — flew into the park and has been seen near the LeFrak Center since last weekend.
The guest has been causing a major stir among birdwatchers.
“It’s like a unicorn emerging from the fog,” said Blake Olmstead, 27, who caught a glimpse of the vivid pink, blue and green bird Wednesday morning.
“It’s something you read about in books, but never think you’ll see in person.”
Randy Schutz, 66, trekked from Inwood to Prospect Park in hopes of laying eyes on the beautiful bird.
“A Painted Bunting in an extravagant bird for this part of the world,” he said. “Down south, they’re more common, but up here, they’re rare. This would be the first time I’ve ever seen one.”
Olmstead said getting a chance to see the painted bunting was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.
“I saw him for 10 minutes,” he said. “He was at the base of a tree. This is really exciting.”
