7 Locally Made Menorahs for Hanukkah

By Serena Solomon | December 1, 2015 7:56am

NEW YORK CITY — Menorahs are central to Hanukkah, the festival of lights, which starts Dec. 6.

Local artists and designers have created unique candelabras to celebrate the holiday. Some are eye-catching in their intricate designs and others offer a more modern look.

Here are seven menorahs that are either designed or made locally, or both:

Menorah

Handmade Menorah from Michal Golan
Price: $550

Your Michal Golan menorah will be one of only 120. The limited edition piece is handmade in Golan's Manhattan studio from sterling silver with details such as African turquoise, tiger eye garnet and sodalite gemstones. It can be purchased through the artist's online store.

Menorah

Ceramic Menorah from Janine Sopp
Price: $185

Janine Sopp works out of her studio in Brooklyn making each piece by hand with earthenware clay. No two pieces are the same. Sopp comes by way of textile and clothing design. You can order her work on Artful Home's website.

Menorah

Ceramic Menorah from Paula Greif
Price: $425

For a minimalist menorah that fits in with your scaled back decor, Paula Greif is your designer. Greif started her career as a graphic designer and art director for magazines before picking up pottery. Each piece is created in her Hudson, New York studio. Order online or try the two Jewish Museum Shop locations on the Upper East Side.

Menorah

Architectonic Menorah from Richard Meier
Price: $1,200

It's easy to see Richard Meier's architectural eye in his uniquely designed menorahs. Meier is based in New York and is the award-winning architect behind buildings such as the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. This menorah can also be ordered through the Jewish Museum.

Menorah

Dachshund Menorah from Jonathan Adler
Price: $128

Of course a dachshund would make the perfect inspiration for a canine-lover's menorah. This unexpected idea comes from artist Jonathan Adler who designed the prototype for this menorah in his SoHo studio. The design is available online and at Alder's boutique locations in Greenwich Village, SoHo, the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side.

Menorah

Sitting Dove Menorah from Vichinsky
Price: $135

Renee Vichinsky began focusing her pottery on Judaic ceremonial pieces in 1980. Working out of her studio in the Hudson Valley, Vichinsky designed the Sitting Dove Menorah exclusively for website Modern Tribe.

Menorah

Unity Hanukkah from Malcolm and Mary Ann Owen
Price: $330

This piece from Adirondack-based artists Malcolm and Mary Ann Owen is made from brass, copper and sterling silver. Its special feature is 11 people holding hands watching the candle light. Buy it online here.
