BROOKLYN — A man was fatally shot in the chest near the Prospect Park Parade Ground in Flatbush Tuesday morning, police said.

The man, who is believed to be in his 30s but not immediately identified, was shot on East 17th Street between Caton and Church avenues around 11:15 a.m., an NYPD spokesman said.

He got a ride to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Reid Egbert, 65, who has lived on the block for 20 year, said he heard three shots Tuesday morning.

"I thought it was fire crackers," said Egbert. "It's surprising, very surprising."

Keon Morris, 23, has lived around the corner for 10 years and said he feels like the neighborhood has gotten safer.

"I was honestly a little bit shocked," Morris said. "It has quieted down over the past couple years."

Police found shells casings outside of 40 E. 17th St. and were seen canvassing the building for information.

There were no immediate arrests.
