SILVER LAKE — Tips for cutting through the "red tape" that can stifle small businesses will be shared at a meeting on Staten Island Monday.

Comptroller Scott Stringer will host the fourth "Red Tape Commission," in partnership with Borough President James Oddo, at St. John's University from 6 to 8 p.m.

The commission features local business owners and government officials who will discuss challenges to staying open in the city and figure out ways to navigate through some of them.

The comptroller's office has already hosted meetings in The Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn and will convene a commission of 29 business owners and regulatory experts after the Manhattan and Staten Island ones.

At the first meeting in The Bronx, Stringer said he wanted the commission to identify troubles owners have that discourage innovation and prevent commercial growth from the "bottom up."

"The commission is designed to be bottom up," Stringer said at the meeting, "so we want to hear from people who actually are struggling every day trying to run a small business."

After the five meetings, the commission — which includes Linda Baran, president and CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce — will review the stories and ideas from business owners and develop a report with ways the city can make it easier for owners, the comptroller's office said.

The final meeting will be in Manhattan on Dec. 10.

The Red Tape Commission meeting will be on Mon., Nov. 23, in the second floor of St. John's University's Kelleher Center, 300 Howard Ave., from 6 to 8 p.m. Owners who want to submit written testimony or comments can email redtape@comptroller.nyc.gov
