CHINATOWN — Police arrested a man accused of attempted rape Friday night after officers spotted the suspect relieving himself on the street, according to the NYPD.

Police said a homeless man, 31-year-old Rubicel Sanchez, approached a 62-year-old woman in the rear lobby of her building and tried to rape her on Nov. 20 at 1 a.m. but she fought him off. The victim refused medical attention, police said.

About 20 hours later, police officers Daniel Roth and Frank Faber spotted Sanchez as he was urinating on the street at East Broadway, according to the NYPD.

Roth and Faber recognized Sanchez from distributed surveillance photos and an encounter the week before on Madison Street near Market Street, when he was so drunk the officers tried to call an ambulance for him before he ran off, according to the New York Daily News.

Roth, who has been on the force for 10 years, and Faber, a 6-month rookie, arrested Sanchez, who was charged with attempted rape, burglary and sex abuse, according to the NYPD.

Sanchez's bail was set at $125,000 cash or $250,000 bond, according to prosecutors. He is due in court on Nov. 27. Sanchez's attorney declined to comment.
