MOTT HAVEN — A 2-year-old boy survived after falling from his third-floor apartment window in a Mott Haven apartment building Wednesday morning, officials and relatives said.
Da'Mir Holmes-Carter was playing in his home at 451 Brook Ave., near East 145th St. while his mother was in the bathroom when he pushed on the window screen and fell, his aunt and FDNY officials said.
"There's a screen that was just not sturdy enough to be in the window, so his mother stepped out to use the bathroom and came back, heard a loud thud in the backyard, and he was just laying there," said the aunt, Raelene Holmes-Andrews, 21, adding that the boy was treated at Lincoln Hospital for a concussion, but had no broken bones or internal bleeding.
"He got up. He was crying, but he got up, and he said he was OK," she added. "He’s doing fine right now. He's talking. He's responsive, everything. He’s fine."
"He's very lucky," she said. "I don't think anybody else would have survived it. It's a miracle."
Holmes-Andrews said the landlord hadn't put window guards in the window, despite requests from the family. Guards are required in homes with young children, under city rules, and there were bars present on the windows on the first and second floors, but not on the third on Wednesday.
The Administration for Children's Services is investigating the fall, according to an agency spokesman.
The child's fall comes after several similar incidents.
A child was sent to the hospital after falling from a Borough Park apartment window in May.
Another boy was found dead after falling from a Richmond Hill apartment window in August. His mother was later charged with murder.
A 2-year-old boy named Nayvem Santos fell to his death from a Concourse window in August.
