LONGWOOD — A man armed with a machete robbed a South Bronx laundromat on Friday by prying open a locked cabinet behind the counter of the business, police said.

The suspect, who officers identified as Jose Arguilar, came into the Giant Laundromat at 700 Southern Blvd. around 11:50 p.m., walked behind the counter and started yanking on the cabinet door to get it to open, video shows.

The recording also shows another person in the laundromat throw something at Arguilar while he is in the midst of his crime, but he casually deflects the object with his machete and keeps trying to open the cabinet.

He stuck his machete behind the cabinet door to help him open it up and eventually succeeded, although he was knocked back onto some bags of clothes as the door flew open.

Arguilar then grabbed an unknown amount of cash from a register and fled, according to the NYPD.

Officers described Arguilar as a partially bald man with brown eyes who stands 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds.

Anyone with information about this robbery is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES), then entering TIP577.
